A hotel door hanger only looks like a simple product. It must fit the handle, remain visible from the corridor, withstand repeated use and stay in place when the door opens.
Check the handle and lock first
A standard die does not fit every door system. Measure the handle or knob, the distance from the edge and all parts of the electronic lock. Test a paper mock-up on several rooms before finalising artwork.
The hanger must not cover the card reader or become trapped between the door and frame. Unusual handles may require a side slit, larger opening or a different shape.
- opening diameter and shape
- width of the hanger neck
- position of the card reader
- clearance from the door edge
Format and message hierarchy
The primary message must be recognised immediately. Copy, icon and contrast should let staff identify room status without standing directly in front of the door.
For double-sided hangers, colour can separate the functions. Avoid excessive promotional information because it weakens the operational message.
- Do not disturb
- Please make up the room
- Please replenish the minibar
- privacy or sustainability message
Paper, synthetic stock or layered board
Heavy protected paper suits many hotels and allows refined finishing. Synthetic stock is useful where moisture resistance and cleaning matter. Layered materials provide more rigidity but require careful edge construction.
Select the material according to expected service life. A seasonal hanger may be simpler, while the everyday room set must survive repeated housekeeping cycles.
- film-protected paper
- water-resistant synthetic stock
- plastic with suitable flexibility
- mounted premium board
Finishing and brand consistency
Finishing should support legibility. Embossing or foil can highlight the mark, but large glossy surfaces may create reflections under corridor lighting.
Check the chosen colour against the actual door finish. A dark design on dark timber may disappear even if it looks good on screen.
Quantity and floor-by-floor packing
Order at least one per room plus a reserve for loss and damage. Larger hotels benefit from packing by floor, building or room category.
When several language or message versions are used, every pack should be clearly labelled. This reduces errors during housekeeping distribution.
Frequently asked questions
Must a door hanger have a standard shape?
No. It can follow the brand and handle, provided it remains easy to use and sufficiently strong.
Can several messages be produced together?
Yes. Separate the versions clearly and plan packing so staff receive the correct sets.
Is a prototype necessary?
It is strongly recommended for a new die or non-standard door hardware.
